It's Labor Day in the US and lots of states have celebrations with parades and festivities for all to enjoy. We all know Labor Day is a widely celebrated holiday, but what is it about exactly?
What Labor Day Really Is
Labor Day came about after the Labor Movement in the late 19th Century. The idea of celebrating American workers was brought up by members of the Central Labor Union around the year 1881. The first Labor Day parade was held in New York City on September 5th. Over 10,000 workers participated. When asked about the significance of the date, it was simply because the date fell midway between Fourth of July and Thanksgiving.
What Happens on Labor Day
To celebrate Labor Day, most people have picnics or throw pool parties, while some states host parades that crowds come together and enjoy. Aside from parades and festivities, people tend to take advantage of huge sales held by lots of retailers.
What You Can Do to Celebrate
Host a barbecue with friends and family to celebrate, attend a parade or watch a parade on tv from home. Go to the beach or kick back on the couch and enjoy a day of rest and relaxation, if you can.
